Life's Too Short to Not Laugh Every Day

July 28, 2008

As most of you know my cute daughter recently got engaged and then just really recently called it off. There were many reasons that brought about this decision but the final one when asked my opinion was: "Eternity is a long time to spend with someone who doesn't make you laugh." So this blog is mainly for all my wonderful young women whom I consider daughters and friends. When you begin dating seriously and start considering marriage please keep in mind that you will have years of struggles and years of success. But no matter what the challenges may be it will all work out if the two of you can work together with smiles on your faces and add some humor to the challenge.

I have definetely gone through some challenges especially when Par was first diagnost with APA but it helped both of us to tell jokes (horse jokes were very common for a while) and laugh about anything we could. Don't get me wrong, it's ok to cry too but make sure you do it together usually the tears become your rainbow of hope. So as you all get ready for your adventure to college just keep this in mind after a date, if he didn't make you laugh and if you don't smile when you think of him, don't waste your time going out with him again.

Never Leave Home Without It

This is is one bit of Trina's wisdom, never leave home without a good book. As most of you know my favorite pastime or hobby is reading. I can't really say when I picked up this incredible habit or hobby but I know it was at a very young age. Well summer time is by far the best time to enjoy this pastime. It's the time of year you can catch me reading for hours by the pool or in the evening on my porch and I might add I don't feel the least bit guilty spending hours doing this.

A few weeks ago I ran into some cute kids from the neighborhood as they were eagerly signing up for the summer reading program at the library. It brought back some fond memories when I would ride my bike to the local library on the very first day of summer break and do they exact same thing. When I was young I didn't have too many friends that shared my enthusiasm for this particulary hobby but now that I've grown up (just a bit) I'm sure there are a few of you that might enjoy this pastime as well. Therefore I thought I would share with you what I've been reading this summer.

Child 44
Book of a Thousand Days
The Host
The Summer Sherman Loved Me
The Very Ordered Existence of Merilee Marvelous
The Uncommon Reader
Beastly
These is my words

And I am currently reading, My Most Excellent Year: A novel of Love, Mary Poppins and Fenway Park.

I highly recommend any of these books and if you go to the library and look for them don't be surprised to find that many are in the young adult section. I guess its my way of staying young. No with all seriousness many of the best novels are found in this section. Ok enough writing I believe its time to go read. Enjoy!!!

It's OK to never grow up

July 19, 2008

Today I dedicate to one of my favorite relatives. Today is my niece Dezi's 20th birthday and first thing this morning I sent her a text asking her if she felt all grown up now that she was no longer a teenager. Her reply was quick and to the point, "I don't want to grow up". Well, perfect answer and that is why you are one of my favorite persons to be around.

You are always the life of the party no matter where the party may be. You have that special gift to simply make people laugh and smile and believe me, that is a special gift. I don't think in the 20 years I have known Dezi have I ever heard a negative word come out of her mouth. She genuinly sees the best in others and life in general. Just recently she was asked by a fellow employee what she was drinking that made her so happy all the time, another quick reply "Water", I don't need anything else I'm just happy to be alive. I love life." So I thank you Dezi for sharing a bit of your happiness with me and in doing so keeping me young.

Baseball According to Trina

July 17, 2008

When someone mentions summer to me the first thing that comes to mind is BASEBALL. Probably due to the fact that for the past 10 years from early April to some time in August that's where I have found my entertainment. This would go back to when I gave birth to a boy and his first word was not mama or dada by BALL. Well last night ended one era of his baseball career, that would be Baberuth Baseball. As I woke up this morning and realized I didn't have a game to go to the loss finally sunk in. Not the same sinking feeling I'm sure Riley experienced but the loss a mother feels.
First thought, how sad it will be to not have the opportunity to soak those nice WHITE baseball pants in the sink after I have scrubbed them for 30 minutes, then I realized the beautiful red sand would no longer linger from the garage to the upstairs bathroom. Then the second thought entered my mind, what would we have for dinner (no hamburger or hotdog at the baseball field), I might serioulsy have to cook dinner again. Well then the real stuff entered my brain, I wouldn't have my group of friends, which by the way became just like family, sitting around me night after night, telling jokes, laughing, cheering and yes we admit a little yelling at the umps (but just a little). This group of friends all have something in common, we all have a son who loves baseball and we support everyone of them. This group of friends who answer to 'mom' no matter which 'son' yelled it out because we love them all. So I thank all of you baseball moms for cheering and loving Riley like he was your own.
Here's my recap of what I have learned about baseball over the past ten years, or Baseball according to Trina. I have learned when a fast pitch is coming or a curve ball , I have learned why it is important to take the first pitch, I have learned the thrill of a squeeze play, of steeling bases, and an unexpected homerun. I have experienced the joy of winning a really close game and the sorrow when you lose. I have learned the most important part of baseball is to make it home safely and I guess that's why this mother loves the game so much. I can totally relate to most of the rules, I think they must have been written in Heaven. I can only imagine what the baseball fields look like up there. Now when someone says summer to me and I think of baseball, let me tell you there is no better place to be on summer night than sitting under the lights surrounded by family and freinds watching a great game of baseball, especially if your a mother of player. I know it's just a game but as David Noyce once wrote, "Baseball is motivating and liberating. It shows us how to work, how to play and how to rest. It teaches responsibility and resilience. It showcases the beauty of diversity and the necessity of adversity. It is inspired and inspiring. Not bad for something that's just a game."
